Scale Operator / Dispatcher – Asphalt

This is a Contract position in Fort Saskatchewan, AB posted August 13, 2022.


BURNCO’s Northern Alberta Asphalt division is hiring a highly dependable and skilled Asphalt Scale Operator/Dispatcher based out of our main Edmonton Asphalt plant to support our operations. Reporting to the Asphalt Plant Foreman and working directly with the Plant Operator, you will coordinate the daily loading of asphalt orders to meet our customer demands. You should be experienced with providing excellent customer service, highly proficient with computer technology, possess strong time management skills and multi-tasking abilities. While this is a full time seasonal position, the opportunity for year round employment will be there for a high performing individual. Key areas of responsibility for this position will include:

What You Will Be Doing

Asphalt Order Scheduling

  • Working with the Plant Operator in a professional manner before, during and after projects to ascertain our customers’ specific project needs
  • Handling customer inquiries and (COD) pricing
  • Scheduling and dispatching asphalt mix as required by the customers
  • Complete all front end procedures required for JWS ticketing software to maintain timely information to head office
  • Report and/or question any scheduling conflicts, equipment issues or unclear job requirements to the Site Foreman or Area Supervisor

Asphalt Loading

  • In conjunction with the asphalt plant, and customers schedule mix requirements as needed
  • Loading hot-mix asphalt from silos into trucks and trailers
  • Maintain communication with plant operators with regards to types and quantities of product required
  • Maintain clear communication with truck drivers and customers
  • Maintain a clean, organized, functional office
  • Scan copies of tickets to head office daily

Customer Service

  • Ensure the day to day communication with our customers is clear and concise, effective for our mutual benefit
  • Assist the customers in their requests whenever possible
  • Provide customer information to co-workers when necessary
  • Collect debit and credit card payment from COD customers, and completes appropriate paperwork as required
  • Treat all customers, truck drivers and fellow employees with equal respect
  • Cooperate with other divisions and departments within BURNCO
  • Performing duties in strict accordance with BURNCO’s Safety Program, Code of Conduct and Mission Vision Values Statement
  • Other duties as assigned.


What We Need From You

  • Experience in and around an asphalt plant, preferred
  • Experience as a Scale Operator or Dispatcher, would be significant assets
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Highly organized and capable of multi-tasking
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal & written
  • Energetic team player, motivated and able to work conscientiously and independently
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations
  • Proficient in basic computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Early riser, with ability to work flexible hours/shifts including weekends
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License and clean Drivers Abstract, with ability to travel independently between our plants from time to time
